3 Easy DIY Home Projects for Under $20
Paint a fun pattern on your wall: This has been one of my favorite additions to our apartment, and all I needed were these supplies:
1. paint brush
2. a sample can of paint
3. a piece of cardboard.
Sample cans of paint are usually only a few dollars, but if you want an even cheaper option, ask your local hardware store to see their collection of “oops” paint, or just ask around. You’d be surprised at how many people have leftover paint laying around!
Directions:
1. Cut the top of the cardboard into a triangle, leaving some space at the bottom edge so there is room to hold it.
2. Hold the cardboard against the wall and drag the brush with paint on it along the top sides of the triangle. You can go all the way to the top of the piece of cardboard and have the lines meet to make it more like this /\ , but I chose to leave an opening at the top.
3. Start at the ceiling and pull the cardboard down as far as you want the space to be between designs. You can always measure if you want them to all be equally spaced, but I just eye-balled it.
One piece of advice: have a towel on hand to wipe off the back of the cardboard if the paint starts dripping down the back. Otherwise you’ll have some paint running down from your design.
2. DIY Plant Basket
For this project, my supplies were:
1. old garbage can
2. Rope or twine
Small garbage cans usually only cost a few dollars, but you can do this with any bucket or can that you want to use for your plant.
Directions:
1. Clean off the outside of the can or bucket.
2. Place a dab of hot glue on the top of the container and adhere the rope to it.
3. Wrap the rope around the can or bucket, adding dabs of hot glue every few inches down until you reach the bottom.
4. Cut off the excess and there you go!
You can also do this with smaller planters you have laying around. I did it with this green planter in my room and I am so happy with how it turned out!
3. Frame pages from a book
For this project, my supplies were:
1. The book The Wonderful Things You Will Be by Emily Winfield Martin
2. Picture frames
You can use any one of your favorite books for this project. Even if you don’t use The Wonderful Things You Will Be, I highly recommend checking it out. It is the sweetest children’s book! Even though I used frames close to the size of the book, you could even use frames you have laying around and cut just parts of the pictures you want to use.
Directions:
1. Pull out a page from the book [I bought two copies: one to read and one to turn into décor]
2. Measure the frame or the matting
3. Trace this size on the picture you want to use and cut out what you have traced.
4. Place it in the frame and you’re done!
